Catechesis of the Good Shepherd – UPDATE
The Atrium has been very busy over the past few months. We have introduced the articles of the mass such as the altar, chalice, paten, tabernacle, ciborium, sanctuary lamp and cross. The children especially find joy in unlocking the tabernacle to find the very special food inside. The children have also explored the colours of the church liturgical year. They recognize that the year is broken up into several, special times – Green for Ordinary Time when things of God continue to grow, Purple for preparing for the feasts of Christmas and Easter, White for the great celebrations of Christmas and Easter and Red for the Feast of Pentecost. It’s amazing how the children can understand and retain all of this God knowledge! The children have also been introduced to the land of Israel and how important it is to our history. They can locate the land of Israel and the significant towns and cities in Jesus’ life, on the globe and map. The land of Israel becomes more real for the children and in turn, so does Jesus.
In these weeks of Advent, we introduce the prophet, Isaiah and his words that that ‘the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light’ and that a ‘child will be born to us. And we will call him Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace
’. The excitement in the children is palpable, they can sense that we are
waiting for someone very special. The season of Advent and Christmas also signals the presentation of the beautiful Infancy Narratives – The Annunciation, The Birth of Jesus and Adoration of the Shepherds and The Epiphany.
The time in the Atrium gives the children the opportunity to have ‘God and Me’ time. This revealing of God to them helps to build an intimate, unique relationship between the child and the Master Teacher.
