Bonifacia Gutierrez, endeared to everyone by the moniker “Nanay Pasing,” went home to Jesus on Sunday, March 13, 2022 at the age 91. The last few days of her life were filled with many memories as her children, grandchildren, and friends showered her with love while she was under care at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She passed peacefully in her sleep.
Nanay Pasing was the first born of Tranquilino and Crispina Gutierrez on August 17, 1930 in Tiaong, Quezon Province, Philippines. She is survived by her siblings Emma Mercado and Maximo Mercado, and by ten of her twelve children namely Gloria Mercene, wife to Joselito Mercene Sr.; Norma Yap, wife to Roger Yap; Elenita Fabro, wife to Filomeno Fabro Jr; Oscar Gutierrez, husband to Julie Baloto; Victoria Magtalas, wife to Rolando Magtalas; Ma. Corazon Mariano, wife to Hernan Mariano; Roel Gutierrez, husband to Lucila Cuala; Onesima Marasigan, wife to Ariel Marasigan; Dulce Cabaltera, wife to Davidson Cabaltera; and Marissa Pili, wife to Noel Pili. She is predeceased by her husband, Gregorio Gutierrez; by her siblings Martina Rizo, Paulo Gutierrez, and Sulpicio Gutierrez; as well as by two of her other children, Edwin Gutierrez, and Lorena Gutierrez.
Pasing was a devoted mother and caregiver. On March 16, 1988 she migrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba with her children Marissa and Dulce to join her other daughter Norma, who moved to Canada years before, with the hope of giving her family a better life. She spent most of her time as a seamstress and enjoyed caring for people around her by cooking delicious meals. She was a spiritual woman and involved in many church activities in her younger years. She will be deeply missed by her family, her friends, and everyone who had been touched by her light as Nanay Pasing.
A celebration of Pasing’s life will be held on March 18 & 19, at Mosaic Funeral Chapel, 1839 Inkster Boulevard, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The funeral service was held on March 22, 2022. Her remains were cremated and will be flown to the Philippines, to be joined with the remains of Tatay Goring as her final resting place.
